Vietnam • Sapa shrouded in the mists

The highlands of Sapa lie some 1600 meters above sea level hence the cool weather compared to the lowlands of Hanoi and nearby Lao Cai. Climbing up winding roads for an hour from Lao Cai, one can feel the abrupt drop in temperature as the breeze becomes cooler and the transport is enveloped in fog so much so that oftentimes, visibility is reduced to just a few feet. The town itself becomes a ghostly scene when the fog rolls in and renders much of everything spectre-like, not much like a scene from John Carpenter's "The Fog" but something akin to the fogged-out conditions in the Cordilleras. Seeing the capture above makes me hanker for a steaming mug of freshly-brewed coffee and a good book.
